Do you know why the zipper is one of the greatest inventions in history?

This article mainly shares the history of zippers.

Can you imagine a world without zippers? I think it must be difficult to imagine. After all, the zipper has been with us humans for many years, and it is everywhere. However, the strange thing is that the sewing invisible zipper did not achieve explosive emergence, nor did it change the world. It took a long time for humans to realize the value of zippers by the yard.

From a historical point of view, the development of the zipper has gone through three stages.

The first person to invent the zippers was Elias Howe, such as nylon coil zipper and metal coat zippers, but his other invention, the sewing machine, was well-known. In 1851, five years after applying for a patent for the sewing machine concept, Elias Howe filed a patent for an "automatic and continuous clothing closing device", which is now what we call a zipper. Perhaps because the zippers for sewing machine was too successful, he did not put the zipper on the market and lost the opportunity to become the "father of the zipper."

About 50 years later, another inventor named Whitcomb Judson designed a "buckle locker" that can be opened and closed with one hand while helping his friend treat back pain. He applied for a patent for this idea in 1891 and showed his invention at the Chicago World's Fair two years later. Although he founded his own company to manufacture this invention, it failed to commercialize it.

The person who makes the zipper appear in people's lives is the engineer Gideon Sundback, who used to be the chief engineer of Judson's company. Such as metal zipper tape, zipper ends metal and chunky metal zippers. Sundback improved Judson's design. By 1913, the number of metal zipper sliders per inch increased from 4 to 10. Two rows of facing sprockets were pulled together by the sliders, and openings were added for the sprocket. These changes created the zipper we know today. Sundback applied for a patent for his new design in 1917, calling it a "detachable slide."

In 1923, B. F. Goodrich Company used Sundback's invention on their new rubber boots, and an executive named them zippers based on the noise they made. As zippers were increasingly used in articles and clothing, B.F. Goodrich tried to patent the name, but by then it had become a common noun.

In the 1930s, a children's clothing display featured zippers, promoting it as a way to teach children to dress independently. With the popularization of this invention, the zipper also attracted the attention of French fashion designers.

The history of zippers played an important role in the development of new technologies in the 20th century, including Velcro, plastic zippers, and resealable bags. The gold metal zipper not only makes it more convenient to tighten clothes, but also the plastic zipper is windproof, dustproof, and waterproof, and does not stick, stick, and rust.

Overall, it makes life easier for everyone, especially for people with disabilities.
